Multiple session on multiple dates – Free for A&BS Members, subsided fee for non-members

  • Are you the chair of a heritage or a mixed heritage/arts organisation that requires support in steering and guiding your organisation in these challenging societal and economic times?
  • Would you value the opportunity to meet others who have similar roles and remits so that you can share and learn in a supportive yet confidential environment?
  • Are you concerned about the ongoing sustainability of the organisation in your care?

If the answer to the above questions is ‘yes,’ then our series ‘The Heritage Chairs Knowledge Exchange’ will address your needs.

Arts & Business Scotland’s Building Capacity: Developing Skills programme is providing a limited number of fantastic opportunities for Chairs of heritage organisations or mixed arts/heritage organisations* to network and learn from governance experts and peers in a mini-series.

The series focuses on providing knowledge in chairing with today’s challenges in mind. They will be delivered in-person in Edinburgh and online to enabling participation across Scotland.

The discussions on shared challenges in the sessions will be facilitated by leading strategic consultant, facilitator, and coach Catherine Holden. She has extensive experience in this area as chair of Craft Scotland and Trustee of Clore Leadership (known for developing and strengthening leadership potential across the cultural and creative sectors in the UK), Art UK and Fruitmarket. Catherine will welcome an open dialogue to share different perspectives on and experiences of the topics discussed.

The session topics have been chosen to theme around key questions chairs might have as we face the challenges of budget cutsdeveloping organisational strategy, and managing key working relationships. Participants will also benefit from networking with fellow chairs to share common challenges and potential solutions.

The sessions can be booked individually or as a set. There are two in-person sessions being delivered in Edinburgh, with an additional two online sessions for those unable to attend the former in person, thus enabling participation from across Scotland (these will be re-staged live with Catherine and guest speakers – not pre-recorded).

Events in the Heritage Chairs Knowledge Exchange:

Event 1: Putting heads together – creating successful strategy workshops

How and why would you run a strategy workshop for your board and/or wider organisation?

Event 2: Together at the top – the Chair and CEO relationship

Who plays what role, and how can you create a mutually supportive environment for the organisation to thrive?

Event 3: The (Income) Generation Game

What are the changes in the funding landscape for heritage organisations, and how can you remain sustainable?

(All in-person events take place at the Scottish Storytelling Center in Edinburgh)

Format and networking

Both the online and in-person events the sessions will include presentations from Catherine Holden and other experts and guests. Presentations will be made digitally available after the event, as well as an attendee list.

* What we mean by ‘mixed arts/heritage’ organisations

The focus of these events is to support chairs of charities who define themselves as a heritage organisation or have a mix of arts and heritage in their remit. The case studies and speakers will have a heritage background.

Fees

  • FREE for Arts & Business Scotland members
  • £20 + VAT for non-members per session

If you sign up for all three in-person sessions, they are offered at a special discount rate of £50 + VAT for all three sessions.

An Update on The Charities (Regulation and Administration) (Scotland) Act 2023 from our Head of Board Development, Catriona Reynolds

The Bill for this Act of the Scottish Parliament – which makes changes to the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 – was passed by the Parliament on 28th June 2023 and received Royal Assent on 9th August 2023.  The key provisions of the 2023 Act are not yet in force and the 2005 Act remains unchanged, for now.  No action is needed at the moment, but OSCR will provide guidance and advice for charities over the coming months.
