Play in a Day

Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland

Business needs served:

  • Supporting innovation, creative thinking and problem solving in the workplace
  • Improving staff health and wellbeing
  • Supporting teambuilding and improving dynamics in the workplace

The process of theatre-making is an intensely collaborative one. It relies on constant conversation, negotiation and compromise to achieve high-stakes outcomes – after all, the show must go on…

During the Play in a Day workshop, participants work together to create and perform a short play. Provided with a classic tale to retell in an original way, it’s all about creating a new piece of work that is unique to them as a group. We’ll provide you and your team with guidance and support from a professional playwright, discussing your team’s needs with you first to match you with a suitable writer who will share expert advice on how to structure a story, develop characters and engage an audience. Your writer will be on hand to offer tips and insights to your staff as they work together in small groups and, at the end of the day, each group will present their short plays for feedback… and applause!

This full-day workshop is designed to provide an unusual and fun way for teams to create something together outside their normal working environment, exploring innovative approaches to problem solving and promoting collaboration. Working with a playwright to identify fresh approaches to familiar stories, they’ll gain new insights, build on existing skills and look for creative solutions to challenges.

This active and engaging workshop is inspired by research showing that participating in the arts builds capacity for managing mental and emotional wellbeing, and can help maintain wellness in participants, and is designed to encourage staff wellbeing, self-worth and confidence. It’s also particularly suited to businesses looking for activities to support staff engagement and help with staff retention.

Had a hoot. Lovely how it made me think in a different way – great to stretch my train of thought!

Delivered by... Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland

Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland was established in 2004 to provide artistically independent creative and career support to the playwrights of Scotland.

We are the only arts organisation in the UK exclusively dedicated to the artistic development of writers for live performance. Through our responsive and inventive event programming, industry knowledge and advocacy, we connect playwrights across Scotland with opportunities to grow, learn, and challenge themselves to make their best work – wherever that is.

Centring the voices and the autonomy of playwrights, we support writers of all levels of experience to reach their creative potential by connecting them with peer support, industry excellence and opportunities for artistic growth. We provide places for playwrights to network and spaces for them to discuss the realities and possibilities of playwriting as a craft and career.

We use our networks to match-make playwrights and collaborators and, through partnerships in and outside of the industry, we find new ways to share playwrights’ unique skillsets with the world.
