Lead Like a Maestro

Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO)

Business needs served:

  • Supporting innovation, creative thinking and problem solving in the workplace
  • Enhancing productivity in the workplace
  • Improving staff health and wellbeing
  • Supporting teambuilding and improving dynamics in the workplace

Lead Like a Maestro is a leadership development programme that utilises the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) platform to explore teamwork and leadership in a unique and inspiring setting.

The ‘behind-the-scenes’ access and interaction with the acclaimed musicians of the RSNO provides a springboard for creative thinking, boosting productivity and wellbeing, while offering a fresh perspective on what it is to lead.

Based at the RSNO Centre in Glasgow, Lead Like a Maestro is an away-day with a difference, taking your team on stage and into the process of a live orchestral rehearsal. Team members are placed in different sections of the Orchestra to experience how musicians, sections and the conductor work together to create the final performance.

After the rehearsal, your team can reflect on and discuss their experience with RSNO directors, exploring parallels between the mechanisms of an orchestra and the workplace. Whether you want to focus on team management, risk and reward or individual development, the workshop is tailored to your company’s specific needs.

To round-off the day, your team will be invited to attend the ‘final product’ of the rehearsal process – a performance by the world-class RSNO at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh or Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Research by Harvard Health has revealed that listening to music significantly improves wellbeing, while Oxford University’s Saïd Business School in collaboration with BT found a conclusive link between happiness and productivity.

Sitting side by side with the Orchestra leads to this fabulous 360-degree experience. It’s totally immersive on all levels - sound obviously but also vision - and listening and watching to the piece emerging from the rehearsal fully formed is just magic!

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) is one of Europe’s leading orchestras with a history stretching back over 125 years. We seek to enrich the cultural life of the nation and inspire audiences globally with music of the highest calibre.

Since 1891, through two world wars and a global pandemic, the musicians of the RSNO have served the people of Scotland, bringing them music that has uplifted, entertained and engaged. Our artistic excellence attracts world-class artists to Scotland, to perform alongside the RSNO.

The RSNO is an ensemble with a variety, quantity and quality of work unparalleled among British orchestras. The reputation of our back catalogue, our wide-reaching engagement programme, the loyalty of our supporters, and the passion of our musicians, staff and directors are key assets in building our future success. We believe that when more people have access to the music of their national orchestra, our communities are stronger, our economy more resilient and our wellbeing is improved. From the largest concert halls in Scotland’s major cities, to the smallest village halls in our rural communities, the RSNO aims to reach more people and mean more to them.
