In the Picture: A Scottish Art and Exhibitions Loan Programme

Art in Healthcare

Business needs served:

  • Improving staff health and wellbeing
  • Supporting teambuilding and improving dynamics in the workplace
  • Supporting innovation, creative thinking and problem solving in the workplace
  • Achievement of business ESG (environmental, social and governance) targets

In the Picture allows us to work with you to place art, created by both established and emerging Scottish artists, in your premises. Selecting works from our collection provides a great opportunity to re-energise an existing team or establish a new one, and the scale of each exhibition is up to you. We work with your team to curate anything from a small number of works for a reception area to a series of larger exhibitions for training or staff rooms; a visit to our Edinburgh store is the exciting starting point!

Your staff work with our Curator to explore the collection and make their selections. The labels and interpretation panels we produce to accompany your exhibition reflect this process and explain why specific works were chosen, giving staff a sense of ownership. Once installed, the art provides a great backdrop for creative activities and conversations, and can help define areas of your workplace where creativity and innovation are encouraged.

In the Picture also allows you to show your team that you value them – particularly helpful if you are encouraging a return to the workplace. Past experience tells us that staff appreciate efforts to make their working environment comfortable and inviting, so this can provide a highly visible welcome for everyone.

We manage all the logistics, including delivery, installation and insurance, and typically ask that you display works for a year, but can be flexible if you’d prefer to refresh more often.

Artworks from our collection are currently on display in venues across Scotland, including the Scottish Hospital Inquiry Head Office, Edinburgh; the Scottish Epilepsy Centre, Glasgow; and Balfour Hospital, Orkney.

Delivered by… Art in Healthcare

Our experience shows us that art, and participating in creative opportunities, can make people feel better.

Since 1991, Art in Healthcare has been working to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities by providing opportunities to experience and engage with high quality visual art, and with artists and creativity. Research shows that taking part in art-based activities, and coming together to be creative in a group, can have a positive lasting impact on health and wellbeing, and that putting art exhibitions into venues can enhance and improve how both staff and visitors experience those spaces.

That’s why, for over three decades, we’ve worked with artists, curators and galleries to collect modern and contemporary art, and our collection now extends to over 1,300 artworks, all acquired with the specific intention of supporting health and wellbeing. In 2011, we began to deliver creative workshops too, led by professional artists and often using examples from our own collection as a starting point.
