ABC: All Breathe Clearly

Scottish Opera

Business needs served:

  • Improving staff health and wellbeing
  • Enhancing productivity in the workplace

ABC: All Breathe Clearly is a programme focussed on one of the most fundamental aspects of our wellbeing: breathing.

Our simple, effective and fun workshops bring teams together and offer participants the chance to boost their wellbeing, learn stress management methods and enhance personal productivity, through techniques that have been used by singers for centuries.

Inspired by our work with people with Long Covid, these hour-long sessions can be delivered for groups of up to 30 people, using in-person, hybrid or fully remote approaches. A gradual series of fun vocal exercises are led by a trained singer, supported by a piano/keyboard player. Throughout the session, participants learn about the role of breath control in supporting the voice, posture and whole body.

Working as a team, participants will perform a short piece of music together by the end of the session. During the process they’ll also boost their oxygen levels, refresh their minds and acquire some simple, practical breathing techniques which they can carry back into their workplace and their home.

No experience is necessary and anybody who can breathe can participate! Our friendly singers are experts in working with non-singers and skilled in creating a safe, welcoming environment where everyone feels able to get involved.

ABC: All Breathe Clearly workshops can be delivered as a one-off or as a series, building up greater benefits over time. We can work anywhere in Scotland, on your premises or elsewhere – all we need is enough space for the participants, and an hour (or more!) of their time.

Scottish Opera is Scotland’s national opera company. Our mission is to entertain, inspire, surprise, educate, challenge and delight audiences, by creating and performing high quality, powerful and memorable opera throughout Scotland and beyond.

What is opera? It’s all about telling stories through music. Whether it’s a tale written centuries ago or a new work commissioned this year, we craft props, sew costumes, build sets and rehearse singers, to bring a narrative to life.

We perform in theatres and concert halls, and in schools and community centres, on lorries, in car parks and in the great outdoors. Our audiences are old and young, experienced theatre-goers and first-timers, on their own and in family groups, urban and rural, and are united by the joy and sheer thrill of stories told through music.

We’re based in Glasgow but we work across Scotland, regularly performing in around 60 venues each year. We’re proud that we offer world-class performances ranging from four singers and a piano which can fit into a village hall, alongside large-scale performances which fill stages and theatre pits.

We’re passionate about the ability of opera to enrich lives, and we’re passionate about the value of singing and singing techniques to enhance health and wellbeing.

I just love it and am so grateful to everyone involved for enriching my life in this way. You have no idea how much this whole experience has meant to me. Thank you again
