A Day with the Romans

The Trimontium Museum

Business needs served:

  • Supporting innovation, creative thinking and problem solving in the workplace
  • Improving staff health and wellbeing
  • Supporting teambuilding and improving dynamics in the workplace

Engaging with archaeology and heritage can promote wellbeing, foster connections and improve physical and mental wellbeing. The Trimontium Museum has a brilliant track record for community engagement, accessibility, archaeological activities and digital resources, and A Day Away with the Romans is a unique immersive journey designed to deliver a wellbeing escapade, to develop creativity and improve team dynamics.

Working with a heritage storyteller, and using a combination of virtual reality technology, hands on archaeology, physical movement and historic crafts, your team will be immersed in the heritage of the Scottish Iron Age landscape, as encountered by the Romans over 2,000 years ago.

You’ll visit this landscape virtually, in a fly-through session taking in breath-taking scenery that fosters a sense of relaxation, wellbeing and wonder. We’ll then guide your team through an artefact handling session with authentic archaeological objects and high-quality replicas. An opportunity for ‘dressing-up’ follows, along with choreography of a Roman sword fight; both activities contribute to team dynamics and communication with a generous helping of fun!

Your team’s next activity is an Iron Age or Roman craft, creating items such as mosaics, pottery or jewellery in our mini craft workshop, which they’ll take away as a memento of their day. As participants learn about ‘a day in the life’ of Romans and Scottish Iron Age peoples, they’ll challenge preconceptions and discuss points of interest, developing critical thinking skills which may also reflect or highlight situations in the workplace.

To round off the day, your team will be led back to the virtual reality lab to for a final experience of time travel, bridging the past and present through 3D images, sound and storytelling.

Delivered by...The Trimontium Trust

The Trimontium Trust was established over 30 years ago in Melrose to save the site of the Roman fort of Trimontium from destruction. Since then, the Trust has been dedicated to the preservation of the site, exploring the story of the Romans in Scotland, their relationship with the native Iron Age population here and the legacy they left behind.

We are the only museum dedicated to Roman Scotland, housing one of the most significant collections of Roman artefacts in north Britain and inspiring interest and engagement with the fort site and its history.

Focusing on public engagement, inclusion and accessibility, we are dedicated to providing transformational experiences, educational resources and volunteering opportunities, ultimately connecting people to the archaeological site, the museum and this fascinating heritage. We act as a community hub, offering a wide range of activities for visitors, members and volunteers of all ages, fostering innovation, creativity, curiosity and collaboration.

With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, we transformed the museum into a modern, Visit Scotland 5-Star awarded visitor attraction, opening in the summer of 2021. The HALO lab (Heritage And Landscape Observatory), a space for education, archaeology and cutting-edge digital experiences, will follow in the Spring of 2023.
